Launaea nudicaulis (L.) Hook.f.

Common Name: Aara, Aghardell, Arerrem, Arzetha Gram, Orreem, Ureem.

General Appearance

Launaea nudicaulis (L.) Hook.f., it is a biennial or perennial herb, up to (10-) 20-50 cm, in their early stages reduced to one or more basal rosettes. Leaves of highly variable size, up to 38 cm long under very favorable conditions, usually runcinate, with acute or rounded segments and whitish, denticulate margins. Flowering stems up to 50 cm long, frequently prostrate but also erect, scarcely foliaceous at the base, bivaricately branched. Flower heads with peduncles bearing bracts and an involucre open in a star shape at the time of dispersal. Involucral bracts with broadly scarious margins, the outer ones ovate, the inner ones lanceolate and considerably longer. Ligule of the flowers yellow. Achenes 2.98-3.32 mm, heteromorphic: the inner ones ± columnar, straight, with 4 primary ribs, usually smooth; The margins are slightly curved, weakly compressed, grayish or almost black, with 5 primary ribs, densely covered mainly towards the base with prominent conical projections and warts. The papus is persistent with silky hairs 7-9 cm long.
