General Appearance

Lactuca haimanniana Asch. ex E.A. Durand & Barratte / Heterotypic Synonyms: Cicerbita haimanniana  (Asch. ex E.A. Durand & Barratte ) Beauverd,  it is a rhizomatous, scapigerous perennial; rhizome fleshy, covered with hard, brown scales; fibrous roots ± thickened, fleshy. Stems scapigerous, 1 or 2. rarely more, 20-40 cm, erect, sparsely glandular-setulose hairy. Basal leaves broadly ovate, deeply lyrate-pinnatisect. (80-) 100-220 x 30-85 mm. long petiolate; base semi-amplexicaule; margins sinuate-denticulate; surface setulose-hairy and glandular hairy on the under surface on veins; glands opaque-white, sub sessile; terminal lobe largest, obtuse, ovate-cordate; lateral lobes much smaller, 1 or 2 pairs, broadly elliptic, acute-acuminate. Lower cauline leaves up to 80 x 20 mm. elliptical, lyrate-pinnatifid, shortly petiolate. Upper cauline leaves 5-40 mm. sessile, amplexicaute, entire to pinnatilobed, with terminal lobe ± triangular, acute-acuminate. Capitula 5-7 or more, arranged in a loose racemose panicle, medium sized. many flowered. Involucre 8-10 x 3.5-4 mm. cylindrical. Involucral bracts imbricate, 2-rowed, glabrous. Outer involucral bracts 1̸2 as long as the inner ones, ovate-elliptical. acute. Inner involucral bracts up to 15 x 3 mm. elliptic-oblong, narrowly scarious margined, obtuse, hairy. Peduncular bracts 2-3.5-6 mm. cordate-ovate, acute, ± merging with involucral bracts. Ligules violet-blue to white.  Cypscla up to 6-5 mm (including beak), obovate-oblong to ± conical, compressed, indistinctly 7-8 ribbed, attenuate above into a stout, pale coloured beak, with apex cupular-cliolate; pappus ± as long as the Cypscla body, scabrid, early deciduous.
