General Appearance

Filago desertorum Pomel, ̸ Heterotypic Synonyms: Evax mauritanica var. cyrenaica Pamp. it is an annual herb, erect to procumbent. Branched, (3-)5-10(-15) cm long. Leaves (8.) 10-15 x 2·2.5 mm, oblong-spathulate to narrowly lanceolate, mucronate; those subtending the cluster of capitula 8-12 (-14),4.5-10(-14) x 1.25-1.75 mm, woolly hairy, ± equal or slightly exceeding the cluster of capitula. Capitula (3-) 6-8 (-12) in an axillary cluster, (4-) 5-6 x 4 mm. sub globose, 5-angled. Involucral bracts 6-7 rowed, with a dark greenish spot below the arista, strongly divergent, rigid and purplish, brown to straw coloured in fruit; those of 1st, row 6 x 1.5 mm (including ± outcurve arista = 2 mm), lanceolate. aristate, back and margins with dense, shaggy hairs; those of the 2nd row similar but slightly broader, those of 3rd row similar to 2nd, but back with a few shaggy hairs in the upper half below the arista; those of 4th, and 5th, row becoming shorter and broader with slightly smaller arista with margins densely shaggy hairy: those of 6th, & 7th, rows 3-3.25 x 1.75 mm, oblong-lanceolate, obtuse-mucronate, slightly convex at the back, back glabrous, margins distinctly ciliate. Lower female florets epappose; corolla 2.75-3 mm long, filifonn; those from the top of the receptacle 2-3, pappose; corolla 2 mm long, narrowly tubular; pappussetae 7-8, scabrid. ± equal to the corolla. Hermaphrodite florets (3-) 5-6 (-8), pappose; corolla 2-2.25 mm long, tubular, 4-toothed; pappus setae 10-12, scabrid. equal to the corolla length. Cypsela c. 0.8 mm, obovoid, cylindrical.
