General Appearance

Cynara cyrenaica Maire & Weiller, it is a perennial with moderately thickened root-stock, a roseate shape of leaves. The stem erect, up to 60 cm, arising from the center of the rosette of leaves, few branched, white-arachnoid-tomentose becoming glabrescent, branches monocephalic. Basal leaves up to 30 x 8 cm, pinnatisect, broadly lanceolate in outline, dark, shiny. glabrous-green on the upper surface and white arachnoid-tomentse on the under surface, petiole short, broad and ± sheathing at the base with margins shortly spinulose, rachis in the lower part narrow becoming broad and sheatinged towards the apex, primary lateral lobes broadly triangular-lanceolate, acute, pinnatifid, alternate to sub-opposite, with somewhat revolute margins, terminal lobule of the primary lobe ovate-triangular, entire or rarely sparsdy spinose-dentate, with 2-3 pairs of lateral spinulose lobules near the base, apex, with a sharp, pallid, up to 3 mm long spine, primary terminal lobe lanceolate, sometimes pinnalifid with spinulose lobules. Cauline leaves few, similar to the basal leaves but smaller and sessile. with broadly winged rachis. Capitula on ± naked peduncles, solitary, c. 2.5 cm (exclude. spines) in diam. Involucral bracts coriaceous. Outer most involucral bracts few in number, cobwebby tomentose, shortly spiny at the apex. Middle and inner involucral bracts broadly ovate, with canaliculated, reddish, somewhat spreading appendages which terminate in to sharp, long (c. 5 cm) spines. Inner most involucral bracts linear-lanceolate, hardly spinescent. Corolla violet. Cypsela 5·6 x 2.5 mm. compressed, indistinctly ribbed, pappus c. 13 mm.
