General Appearance

Carduus myriacanthus Salzm. ex DC., it is an annual herb, up to 30cm. Stems simple or branched in the upper part, sub glabrous or slightly arachnoid. Basal leaves oblong-lanceolate, with 8-12 pairs of deeply lobed lobes and spines up to 4.5 mm long; upper surface with scattered multicellular hairs and lower surface arachnoid with multicellular hairs on the veins and unicellular hairs between the veins. Flower heads solitary or in groups of 2-3, sessile or sub sessile. Involucre 15-20 x 6-11 mm, sub ovoid, arachnoid. Middle bracts lanceolate, attenuate from the base, erect-spreading, with a scarious margin in the lower third and an apical spine up to 2 mm long. Flowers with a tube (5-) 6-8 mm and a limb 8-9.5 mm long. Achenes 4.3-4.8 x 1.8-2.2 mm, straw-yellow, with a globose, slightly five-lobed apical prominence 0.5-0.9 mm long. Pappus 13.5-17 mm long.
