Common Name: Shobrum.
Family: Asteraceae
Flowering Time: May-Jun.

General Appearance

Atractylis serratuloides Sieber ex Cass., it is a perennial, caulescent, glabrescent or hairy (in the young parts), tufted; 15-20 (-30) cm tall and often 25-30 cm in diam. Stems & branches often brittle, rigid, interlaced, with white or whitish-grey bark peelings. Cauline leaves (10-) 20·30 x5-8 mm, lanceolate, pinnatisect, greyish pubescent or canescent on both faces; latera lobes often double spiny; spine yellowish, up to 5 mm. Capitula discoid, pale flesh or whitish (the Libyan taxon has white florets), terminal at the ends of branches. Involucre ovate to ovate-oblong. (7-) 10-14 mm long and 5-8 (-10) mm in dim, (exclude. outermost, erecto-patent, leafy, supplementary involucral bracts). Supplementary involucral bracts sub-1-rowed, 2-6, 9-20 x 3-6 mm, similar to upper cauline leaves. Involucral bracts of the 1st row 4 x 1 mm, ovate, greyish cobwebby on the dorsal face; margins narrowly scarious; apex gradually tappered into a 1-25 mm yellowish mucro. Involucral bracts of the 2nd row 5 x 1.5 mm, oblong, cobwebby at the dorsal surface forming a characteristic triangular area below the mucro; somewhat broadly scarious, apex abruptly narrowed into 1.25 mm, yellowish mucro. Subsequent involucral bracts 6-8 x 3-5 mm, broadly lanceolate to broadly oblanceolate, cobwebby below the mucro; margins broadly scarious; apex abruptly narrowed into a 1.25-2 mm long mucro. Involucral bracts of penultimate row 12 x 3 mm, oblanceolate; margins scarious; apex abruptly narrowed into a 2 mm mucro. Innermost involucral bracts 10-12 x 0.5-1 mm, linear to linear-lanceolate, glabrous or slightly hairy below the mucro; margins scarious, distantly ciliolate; apex gradually mucronate; mucro 2-2,5 mm. Corolla 7-8 mm long. Cypsela (immature) 4.5-5 mm; pappus setae up to 7 mm, connate in a ring at the base, dark brown with lateral branches dirty white.
