General Appearance

Asphodelus refractus Boiss.,  it is an annual herb, with one main root, and many branches. Leaves all basal forming a rosette, green, glabrous, sticky, ± semicircular, hollow, c. 20 x 0.2 cm, attenuate. Scape 1-6 per plant. glabrous, hollow, leafless rarely leafy, c. 1 (-1.5) m high, with many branches, (branches usually shorter, up to leaves level). Inflorescence double to triple racemed-panicle, with many flowers. Bracts 2-3 mm long memhranous, ± triangular with acuminating tip, whitish with dark nerve. Flowers small, solitary or in pairs., bracteolate. Pedicels c. 6 mm. articulate at the lower third, ± near base. Perianth stellate. Tepals 6, ± equal, linear-lanceolate, obtuse, 2-3 x 1-1.5 mm, whitish with dark purple nerve. Stamens 6, sub equal, shorter than tepals; filaments ± fusiform, with alternating tip and flattened base. Anthers ovoid-oblong, c. 1 mm long, middixed. yellow-orange in colour. Ovary green, sub globular, tricarpellate. Style filiform, equaling to shorter than stamens, stigma trilobed, each lobe inflated at tip. Capsule hemispherical-hexagonal, 3-4 mm in diam. Seeds ± triquetrae c. 2 x 1 mm with blackish testa.
