General Appearance

Scilla peruviana L., it is a bulbous geophyte, green herb with rhizomatous discoid stem and fibrous roots. Bulb ovoid. 2-7cm diam., covered with several layers of membranous brown to dark-brown, coriaceous tunics. Leaves basal usually on the ground surface, forming a rosette, linear. 8-24 x 1-2 cm, glabrous with smooth surface and ± pointed, slightly curving inside tip, margins dentate. Scape 6-20 cm long, smooth, cylindrical, many flowered. Pedicels 2-9 cm long. Bracts membranous, linear. uninerved, with dentated tip margins, 1.2-2 cm long. Perianth stellate to campanulate. Tepals free, ± equal, lanceolate with ± pointed tip incurved, 5-8 x 2-3 mm uninerved, blue to violet-bluish in colour. Stamens 6. shorter than tepals, 4-6 mm long; filaments filiform with broad base and attenuate tip. Anthers dorsifixed, oblong linear. Ovary and Style pear-shaped; stigma capitate. Capsule pear-shaped, containing 12-18 ovoid to sub globular. Black seeds, c. 2 mm long.
