General Appearance

Anabasis articulata (Forssk.) Moq., it is a shrub up to 50 cm. Branches short and very divided; the older ones are glaucous-ashy in colour; twigs 1.5-4 mm thick, pale green or greenish-yellow, clearly articulated, fragile; segments generally scarious on their upper edge, whose concave face is villous. Leaves opposite, amplexicaul and fused together and with the stem forming the segment; lamina reduced to a simple scarious and acute scale. Bracteoles 2, shorter than the perianth, acute, pubescent. Flowers up to 5 mm, axillary, opposite or less frequently sub verticillatea, grouped in a spike-like inflorescence at the top of the twigs. Perianth pieces scarious, oblong, obtuse or acute, 2 external and 3 internal; during fruiting they may not be modified or may develop a transverse wing (either in all of them or only in the external or internal ones) giving the whole plant a beautiful metallic reddish colour. Ovary pubescent or papillose; style short; stigmas erect or recurved. Fruit with fleshy pericarp, adherent to the seed.
